3rd Grade Tessellations

The third grade students made these tessellations as part of a unit on quilts.  To create the patterns, each student started with a square of cardboard.  In the corners they wrote the letters P-A-R-T.   Then, they drew and cut lines from side to side and top to bottom.  To create their new interlocking shape, they rearranged the letters to spell T-R-A-P in the center of the shape and tapped everything together.  Starting in the middle of their page, they traced around the outside of the shape.  They continued to place the shapes next to each other, on all sides, top and bottom, until the whole page was filled.  Then, they filled in the shapes with solid colors and patterns.
