The third grade worked on this tessellation project for two weeks. We talked about M.C. Escher and his work using mathematics. For our tessellations, we put them together using letters. Each student received a square piece of cardboard and wrote the letters P,A,R,T in the 4 corners. Then, they drew a line (curvy, zigzag, etc.) from top to bottom and left to right. They cut along these lines to make 4 pieces, and reassembled them to spell the letters T,R,A,P at the center of the 4 pieces. This process gave each student a unique shape that would fit together like a puzzle piece. They traced their puzzle pieces to cover an entire sheet of paper, then filled them in with paint.
