Today, the first graders made clay minions. (A special request from one of the students). We started with pinch pots. They each began with a ball of clay. By pushing their thumbs into the middle of the ball and pressing out, they created the basic pot shape. This became our minion head. Next we made the eyes. We started by rolling small balls of clay and flattening them. To add detail, we carved into the clay with sharp tools. To attach the eyes, we talked about scoring and slipping (scratching and adding a water and clay mixture). This process makes sure they eyeballs will stay stuck on. For finishing touches, we used our tools to carve silly hair and smiles. They will dry for the next few weeks before they go into the kiln. Once fired, we will paint them.
