Pre-Kindergarten Thumb Print Birds

The pre-k students began class watching For the Birds. It is a short animated movie from Pixar about some bullying birds who end up getting a taste of their own medicine. To start the project, we drew two telephone poles and a background using crayons. We added a drooping telephone wire and set to work on our birds. Using small cups of water, the students wet their fingers and rubbed them on our tempera bricks. This resulted in just the tip of their finger getting painted (rather than their whole hand). They pressed their finger onto the wire, then wiped the paint on a small piece of wet sponge. They continued this stamping until their entire wire was full. The finishing touch was using sharpies and crayons to add eyes and beaks.
